The issue: The SCSU Theater department might be on the cutting block, along with several other cutbacks at SCSU.
What we think: With tuition increasing on a yearly basis, programs and services should be maintatined at the current level.

SCSU students will more than likely see an increase of 13 percent on their next tuition bill. In addition, some majors might be cut and less experienced instructors will take the place of professors.

The college of fine arts and humanities is considering shutting down the theater, film studies and dance department to cut costs.

Losing one major hurts SCSU academically. Having people on campus with different backgrounds and different interests is what helps make this a university.

The history department, in another cost cutting effort, is planning to let go three professors and is adding adjunct professors to help teach the democratic citizenship class. Democratic citizenship is a core requirement for all SCSU students.

Richard Lewis, dean of social sciences, said that he needs to find ways to cut excess capacity to meet the needs of upper level classes.
"A lot of students were just taking (democratic citizenship) to take a class," he said.

If the dean of a college is cutting classes that he feels are not important, then why should students be expected to take these college level courses?

Regardless, SCSU finds itself in a critical stage. Tuition is going up and the educational value is going down. Students often find themselves fighting to get into classes, while dealing with sections and classes being cut. The university has been forced by the state to come up with ways to stay fiscally sound.

However, students must demand that the value of their education be maintained and that SCSU look beyond slashing budgets as a method to solve problems. Deans, chairpersons, professors and students need to work together to find ways to balance SCSU's budget while maintaining the institution's academic integrity.
SCSU students deserve better.
