Art, food unite

The Empty Bowls Soup Feed Benefit took place at the Paramount Theater Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Meals cost $10 per person ($50 per family) and participants got to keep bowls to remind them of donating for a good cause. People donated money and received soup in a bowl of their choice.

Other food and beverages were also contributed to the event by various restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops and hotels.

Empty Bowls is a non-profit organization dedicated to positive and lasting social change through the arts, education and projects that build community.

The name has been used for events in several U.S. communities that want to raise awareness and develop support for fighting hunger in the Central Minnesota community. It is in partnership by Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Service and the Paramount Arts District.

Students from several area schools, colleges and churches, plus local artists and other volunteers participated in the event, such as Charlotte Neron, resident of Sauk Rapids, who has been doing pottery for 32 years.

"I was contacted by Lutheran Social Services, who knew I did pottery," Neron said. "I donated four to five bowls for the project."

Another volunteer for the project was Melissa Gohman, Visual Arts coordinator at the Paramount and pottery instructor, who donated six bowls to the silent auction and 20 to the community.

"I have been doing pottery for 17 years," Gohman said. "I love what I do."

The Catholic Charities' Caritas Food Shelf also served a resource of other not-for-profit groups, such as shelters. Caritas' purpose is to be the "safety net" for people with other sources of income for food, such as employment, public assistance and food stamps, although not adequate to cover all needs.

Plenty of entertainment also contributed to the event, such as the SCSU Performers, Cantabile Girls Choir, Z-magic and the Gospel Trio.

A hot tub raffle drawing also took place. All proceeds from the event went to fight hunger in Central Minnesota by supporting area food shelves and feeding youth in need.
