Thursday's debate:
The recent discovery of a suspect in the killings of Julianne Williams and Laura Winans (Two hikers were killed, presumably because they were lesbians) as well as threats received by members of GLBT on this campus have brought up questions about whether hate-crimes laws are justifiable.
Are laws that provide extra penalties for crimes committed because of the victim's race, age, sexual orientation, etc. fair? Are they consistent with the principles of the American judicial system?
To participate, please send in a 450 word essay. Essays can be sent via e-mail at [email protected] or can be dropped off at Room 13 Stewart Hall.
