Tornadoes strike Northern Texas
Tornado season began Tuesday in Texas when at least two of them touched down near the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
The tornadoes and numerous strong thunderstorms damaged at least two dozen homes and ripped the roof off a church. Two people from Fort Worth said that when they emerged from their shelter, they found that their carport had been tossed from the front yard to the back yard. Across the street, their neighbor's car had been smashed by a tree.
The storms also caused a 25-car pile-up on a Texas freeway, and the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport halted flights for about 45 minutes.
There were no immediate reports of fatalities or serious injuries.
Woman faces fine for cigarette butts
Mari Ann Sistrunk of Olive Branch, Miss., could serve as an example for smokers everywhere. She recently received a $203 fine for throwing her cigarette butt out her car window.
Sistrunk was driving home Monday from her job at Wal-Mart when police officer Adam McHann witnessed the crime. He said that his original intent in issuing the ticket was to warn her not to throw butts out the window. McHann also told her that the particular intersection was notorious for littering and grass fires are a threat.
Sistrunk was surprised by the amount of the ticket and claims that she had not been littering.
