Indonesian Night to introduce SCSU to island nation's culture
The Indonesian Student Organization will present Indonesia Night 2002: "A Night With a View" Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Brick Courtyard, Atwood Memorial Center and Ritsche Auditorium.
The theme for Indonesian Night 2002 is "Knowing Us Better." The Indonesian Student Organization hopes to introduce their culture to the students of SCSU and the residents of the St. Cloud through this event.
"We want people to know more about Indonesia, because in comparison with other organizations at SCSU, not many people know the Indonesian Student Organization," said Markus Sutanto, a senior computer studies major. "We hope with Indonesian Night, people at SCSU and in the surrounding community will know and understand our culture better."
The islands of Indonesia are located between Thailand and Australia. The republic is home to a diverse range of people. There are 365 ethnic and tribal groups living in Indonesia speaking 583 dialects.
"That's why we have the motto 'Unity in Diversity,'" Sutanto said. "We want people at SCSU to learn about our cultural diversity. We have so many cultures, but we are still one."
A night of music, fashion and dance will serve to introduce the community to Indonesia, a country with the world's fourth largest population, and a mountainous landscape.
The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Brick Courtyard at Atwood Memorial Center. There will be a fashion show and a traditional ceremony called Tedek Siten, which is a ritual of stepping foot on earth.
Stephen Fuller a Professor of Music, Choral, and Humanities at SCSU is the coordinator for the musical portion of the evening which will take place at 7 p.m. in Ritsche Auditorium.
"We will be presenting traditional Indonesian songs on a traditional Indonesian instrument called Angklung, it's made from bamboo," Sutanto said.
So far 100 tickets have been sold and the Indonesian Student Organization hopes to sell 200.
Tickets cost $5 for students and $7 for faculty and public. For more information e-mail [email protected] or visit the Indonesian Student Organization Web site at: condor.stcloudstate.edu/~iso.
