KVSC garners awards
By Chris Baldwin/Contributing Writer
KVSC and six of its reporters were honored April 5 when they were presented with awards by the Minnesota Associated Press.
Rob Callahan, Dot Johnson, Jo McMullen, Joe Gill, Jim Olander and Jason March were received the awards at the Midwest Journalism Conference in Bloomington.
"About 90 percent of the people working here are students, the other 10 percent are community volunteers," McMullen said.
The station plays music, broadcasts SCSU sporting events and serves as an alternate news source for the community.
KVSC competes in the class-one category, which is for stations that have one or less full-time employees. Some of the other stations KVSC competed with were from the University of Minnesota, Mankato, Albert Lea, Little Falls and Brainerd.
KVSC has been an AP member for 20 years. It is their source for their eight daily newscasts. A total of six stations in St. Cloud use the AP. KVSC pays a service fee, and in return the AP may send out up to 45 stories a day across the news wire.
Callahan, who graduated last year, received a first place award for the feature program category. He submitted a 15-minute perspective on the use of American Indian mascots in college sports.
Johnson and McMullen won first place for their in-depth reporting on the employee contract vote. The report was a collaborative piece on the strike implications by the faculty at SCSU.
"We wanted to show the human side of how strikes affect decisions," McMullen said. The human side focused on a preview of the vote.
McMullen, the station manager, started working for KVSC in the fall of 1992. As the only full-time employee at the station, she is always helping out every department.
"My job is always evolving," McMullen said. "I grumble about being busy, but then I realize that I need to be busy."
Husky Sports Friday, by Olander, March and Gill, won first place for the second year in a row in the sports reporting category. The show consists of a recap of games from the week before, talk of upcoming series and interviews with coaches and players.
Olander submitted two pieces for the sports play-by-play category. He won first place for Men's Husky Hockey and honorable mention for his play-by-play of the final five championship.
"The hockey play-by-play was most enjoyable for me at the NCAA tournament," Olander said. "It was a dream come true and the opportunity at KVSC is outstanding."
Olander received an honorable mention for the sports reporting category. His Husky hockey player profile of Scott Meyer consisted of an interview and highlights of last season's goalie. Olander is currently in his third year at SCSU and plans to return to KVSC next year as sports director.
"I like the behind the scenes stuff, the production aspect, and it seems like KVSC hires a lot of good people," March said.
March will be graduating this year. He has been hired by Regent Communications to do the play-by-play for the St. Cloud River Bats baseball team.
"It was a great opportunity to go to the event, meet with other professionals, and shake their hands," McMullen said. "All of the award winners used the event to advance their careers."
