Today's debate:

The recent discovery of a suspect in the killings of Julianne Williams and Laura Winans (Two hikers killed, presumably because they were lesbians) as well as threats received by members of GLBT on this campus have brought up questions about whether hate-crime laws are justifiable.

Are laws that provide extra penalties for crimes committed because of the victim's race, age, sexual orientation, etc. fair? Are they consistent with the principles of the American judicial system?
