St. John's Abbey provides safe haven
St. John's Abbey, the monastery near St. John's University, is currently housing 13 to 15 monks that could potentially pose a threat to the community.
Most of them have been accused of, or admitted to, committing acts of sexual abuse said Abbott John Klassen. During their time at St. John's Abbey, they are limited to where they can go and what they can do. The restrictions include things like prohibiting them from being on college or prep school grounds and university athletic facilities.
The surrounding community's reaction to the news has not been completely positive, but Klassen believes that having these monks in a monitored and controlled environment is the best thing for them and the community.
None of the priests under restriction by Klassen have been criminally charged with a sexual abuse offense.
King's may close due to unpaid taxes
Kismet Investors, the company that owns King's Inn Strip club, could face the loss of its sales tax license because of $71,000 in unpaid sales taxes, interest and penalties. The loss of the license could put King's out of business, as it is illegal to sell anything that requires a 6.5 percent state sales tax without the license.
Revenue department officials said that Kismet Investors did not file a sales tax return in November, December, January or February.
