The issue: Some SCSU organizations are publicly supporting a presidential candidate for Wednesday's and Thursday's Student Government elections.
What we think: As a student media organization, University Chronicle does not wish to publicly support any one candidate.

During each United States presidential election, newspapers and other media organizations throughout the state and nation choose a candidate to publicly support.

These media organizations attempt to provide unbiased information about the candidates so that the public can make well-educated votes. On the other hand, they also have a business end that deals with the financial aspects in order for the media company to exist for any length of time. The administration and business people of the companies often choose the specific candidate to support.

Many of the media companies do this effectively; however, some of the companies' financial departments sway the election coverage simply because they are in charge of the money. Sometimes the companies' administrative departments sway the coverage because they hold the power to do so.

When this happens, the quality of the medium suffers. The news becomes biased and the public is not fairly informed.

At University Chronicle, our editorial board is made up of students who are not key in the news gathering portion of the paper; nonetheless, because all three of us board members are mass communications majors, we decided to steer clear of publicly supporting any one candidate.

Instead, we will work behind our news employees to help make the coverage as non-biased as possible. As students, we feel we are too close to the decision at hand to encourage other students to vote one way or the other.

We will, however, encourage students to vote. As a university organization, we have seen how Student Government decisions can impact us. We have seen how important it is for students to become more involved in life on campus.

We want students to be responsible, decision-making citizens of the SCSU community.
