California train collision claims 2 lives
Two people were killed and at least 260 injured in a collision between a Burlington Northern freight train and a Metrolink commuter train during the Tuesday morning rush hour in southern California.
The freight train was moving at an estimated 10 miles per hour at the time of impact. The commuter train had stopped just before the collision. Despite the slow speed, passengers were sent flying through the commuter's double-deck cars, and two cars were knocked completely off the track.
The accident occurred because the two trains somehow ended up on the same track. The reason is still under investigation but authorities believe that the freight train was improperly switched to a different track.
Mexican Congress doubts its president
The divide between Mexico's President Vicente Fox and the country's Congress continues to widen because of a conversation between Fox and Fidel Castro.
A tape released by Castro Monday of their private conversation confirmed that Fox asked him to leave the country before a U.N. development summit and the arrival of President Bush.
Leftist lawmakers in the Congress have called this incident the biggest disgrace that Mexican foreign policy has suffered.
