They were expected to do so much, yet accomplished so little.

This was the tale of the 2001-2002 SCSU men's basketball team. Expected to make a run at the Division II national crown, the Husky men fell flat down the stretch, and didn't even make the NCAA tournament.

Next season, however, they'll be looking to turn a few heads, as they will be underdogs to contend in the North Central Conference. The team announced their 2002-2003 captains at the annual banquet in St. Cloud last week. The squad's leaders will be seniors Forrest Witt, Jason Kron, and junior Alex Carlson.

The sharp shooting Witt led the team in scoring, and three-point shooting last year. He averaged 15.9 ppg, and banged down 74 treys for a 47 percent average. The one area he will have to improve on is his ball handling and decision-making. He committed a team-high 52 turnovers in 2001-2002. Witt was also voted Team MVP at the banquet.

Kron became the team's most reliable player last year. The forward led the team in rebounding with an average of 6.2 per game. He also chipped in 11 ppg, and was named NCC Defensive Player of the Year. Kron received the same honor from his team at the banquet. His aggressiveness on both ends of the floor was key to the Huskies winning 21 games.

The injury bug plagued Carlson last year. He broke his left index finger in late December and never fully recovered after his layoff. He did lead the team in assists, however, with 89. His output of 10.8 ppg should also increase if he manages to stay healthy. A healthy point guard like Carlson could make all the difference in the world for SCSU.

SCSU head coach Kevin Schlagel also added another recruit this week.

He is 6'3" Pat Weihert from Watertown, Wis. The high school senior averaged 19.7 ppg and six rebounds a game for Watertown High School. He was named All-Conference and Team MVP last year. He was also selected to the Milwaukee Sentinel's All-Area team.

On SCSU's men's basketball Web site, Schlagel said that Weihert will add a different dimension to the team.

"Pat is a well-coached athlete that plays hard on both ends of the court," Schlagel said. "We look for Pat to help us at the wing position and in particular, the transition game."

Weihert joins fellow recruits Matt Siegle of Long Prarie-Grey Eagle and Scott Peters of Litchfield as the newest members of the Huskies' roster.
