Inmates may pay for room, board

A new law passed earlier this month and signed by Gov. Jesse Ventura will allow county jails to charge convicted criminals for their room, board and medical expenses.

However, many quarters have questioned whether the inmates would be able to afford it.

The new law would allow county jails to set fees and charge inmates even after they had been released. It was modeled after a similar law which allows for prison inmates to be charged for their stay in correctional facilities.

The law passed with a 64-0 vote in the Senate and a 108-22 vote in the House of Representatives.

More claiming priests abused them

More people are contacting the victim advocate of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis following reports of sexual assault by priests.

Phyllis Willerscheidt, the advocate, said 10 to 15 people had contacted her in the past month to report various degrees of misconduct.

Some of the victims are living in the archdiocese now but alleged abuse in other dioceses in the past.

Willerscheidt said she has also spent time counselling victims whose emotional wounds were reopened following recent reports of abuse.
