| I find it quite odd that the political left is up in arms about many of the newly enacted anti-terrorist laws.
You see, they are claiming that they violate the Constitution.
On one hand, they are totally correct. There are so many blatant violations of the Constitution occurring today that, quite frankly, I am a bit afraid. It is starting to look like the only thing Orwell had wrong was the date.
On the other hand, isn't it a bit, well, hypocritical? I mean, since when is the left the champions of the Constitution? After all, we are talking about people who have spent years twisting and shredding the wording of the Constitution to fit every little expansion of government they dreamt up. Do the words "living document" ring a bell?
For example, the Constitution I read clearly states that "the right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed." Where was the left when the infringements on the second amendment were occurring? Far from avoiding speaking out against Constitutional violations, they were the leading proponents of such violations. I, for one, can't find anything in the words "shall not be infringed" that a bright child of seven can't decipher.
What about federal welfare programs? The 10th Amendment clearly states that "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people." Where does the Constitution grant the feds the power to redistribute income?
Some would respond that the clause about promoting the general welfare covers this.
Nonsense. That was clearly designed to promote the general welfare in the ways specifically listed. Think about it for a second. If not, if, say, the government had the power to promote the general welfare in whatever way it chose, why have a Constitution at all?
This idea also applies fairly well to the abuse of the interstate commerce. They take the interstate commerce clause and stretch it into meaning that Congress can do whatever it wants to any business that buys or sells anything that has ever crossed a state line.
Fact is, after years of calling for bigger and more intrusive government, the left is getting exactly what they wanted.
If I didn't feel so sick about the whole thing, I would say that it couldn't have happened to a more appropriate group of people.
