Mike Hayman, director of residential life, will retire from SCSU at the end of this year. Hayman has been working at SCSU since 1972. He was an SCSU student in 1967.

He's been at SCSU since 1972, and now Michael Hayman, director of residential life, will retire after this year the 30th in his career.

Hayman has had many years of experience with SCSU. He earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education and health education at SCSU. He also earned a master's degree in counseling.

"The combination of education and experience at SCSU are pertinent to my job," Hayman said.

Hayman arrived at SCSU in 1967 as a student, and became so involved in residential life that he never really left.

He was first hired as the director of residence hall programs in 1974, and later in the 70s he picked up his full-time job as director of residential life, in addition to being acting directors for both security and Atwood.

"(I) have been very fortunate to have advanced to my current position," Hayman said.

However, there comes a point in one's life where there are other pursuits. Hayman loves everything he has done with and for SCSU and hopes to stay involved part-time for a while longer.

"I have expressed a willingness to discuss with the university possible ways to stay involved with the university for a year or two on a part-time basis, should they have desire for that to happen," Hayman said. "Should that occur, great. If not, that is also great."

The reason for his open-mindedness? Because he has a love and want to pursue many other aspects of life.

"The answer to (why I am retiring) is of course, why does anyone retire? To spend time with my family; to pursue my hobbies; to take fishing/golfing/hunting trips when I want to; because I am young enough to hopefully enjoy many years of retirement (God willing); to head south in the winters; to chase my wife around the house; because I can afford to; because it is a good time. These are all good reasons to retire and would be true in my case."

Many will miss him for everything he has done for this campus.

Diane Schellinger, assistant director of residential life, was originally hired by Hayman in 1978. Having been involved with SCSU for 12 years now, and having known Hayman for 25 years, she, along with other staff and students, will miss him greatly.

"We are happy and excited for him. Mike's contributions to the residential life program and to SCSU is phenomenal," Schellinger said. "His commitment to students, and his dedication to serving them well, along with his leadership on this campus is hard to compare to anyone. His integrity, knowledge/expertise, and success are recognized, appreciated and admired by so many. He will be missed, but certainly not forgotten."
