SCSU to get a tune up over the summer

SCSU buildings will show off a minor face lift to students when they return for classes in the fall.

The buildings and grounds department has been planning for some time to make necessary repairs and changes to the buildings on campus. This summer residence halls will benefit greatly from the many routine repairs that will be made on them. SCSU will also gain more rooms for students who choose to live on campus during the next school year.

Renovations to Lawrence Hall will be the one of the main focuses of this year's construction. The building is currently empty, but soon Lawrence Hall will be filled with construction workers who will be making repairs and renovations to the buildings set up.

Jim Williams, director of the building and grounds department, said that the building will become a combination of both dorm rooms and offices. The bottom two floors will be the new home for the International Studies Department's offices. The top two floors will be made into more dorm rooms available to students.

Shoemaker Hall is another dorm that will be under repair and renovation during the summer. The east wing of Shoemaker will be receiving new windows, but the major work for the building will be done on North Shoemaker.

"If you go up and look at it (Shoemaker Hall) you can see that it needs work," Williams said.

Renovations to the exterior of North Shoemaker will include brick work, roof repair, window replacement and changes made to the parking lot area.

Williams said that the goal is to make more parking available in the area between North Shoemaker and the ECC.

Sherburne Hall is another dorm that will have window work done. The weather stripping that lines the windows from floors two through seven will need to be removed and replaced by the time students are ready to move in next fall.

The Performing Arts Center is also on the to do list of the building and grounds department. Every door on the outside of the PAC will be replaced.

Williams said that the door replacement on the PAC is just basic maintenance and upkeep.

"The doors that are there now are rusted and decayed," Williams said.

Williams does not know what the new doors for the PAC will look like. He said that he only knows that the doors on the building have to follow the code for the building that is enforced by the city.

Another goal of the building and grounds department is to get the water fountain that is located just outside of the PAC running in time for spring commencement ceremonies. Usually the fountain would have been working by now but this year the weather has not been cooperating.

"It just has been too cold," said Diane Decker, coordinator of facilities management.

As for the rest of the renovations and construction that will be taking place over the summer, the building and grounds department will try to have all of that finished by the beginning of the 2002 fall semester.

"A lot is to be done before school starts, we prefer not to do construction when classes are in session," Decker said.
