Who is John Galt?

| "The are are no evil thoughts except one: The refusal to think."
-Ayn Rand
I am sick of writing about politics. When you think about it, government, by its very nature, is a mechanism of control. That which is governed is that which is not free. Unlike both the left and the right, who merely argue about who should be controlled, I deny the premise itself. You should not be controlled. You should be free.
Due to this, political discussions rarely change people's minds. The argument lies elsewhere. Political arguments are not truly political in nature, they are philosophical. This is what I wish to write about today.
At issue here is the nature of world views. Our current paradigm is defective, and thus we can only discuss who should rule whom, and never move the discussion beyond. Look around you. On campuses across the country, reason is everywhere being swept away by a flood of emotionalism. Art is becoming nonsense. Meritocracy is becoming mediocrity. Indeed, the concept of greatness itself is being killed in the name of a false, unattainable sense of equality.
But there are alternatives. To subvert this dominant paradigm what is needed is good philosophy. I do not mean just the logic class you took here at SCSU, though this is a necessary part. I mean a different sort of philosophy entirely. More of an ancient Greek, or, perhaps, Renaissance type of world view. The type of philosopher I speak of would seek a world where love is as important as logic, music as important as math, sex as important as science; in short, where beauty is as important as reason. However, in the end, even this is transcended. The type of person I speak of realizes this: beauty is reasonable, and reason is beautiful.
But I cannot possibly hope to express this all in one short column. Therefore, I would like to use this as a springboard.
If, over the course of the summer, you seek a challenge to the mainstream, I cannot more highly recommend the book "Atlas Shrugged," by Ayn Rand. For those of you who sicken of mediocrity, who yearn for something more in life, for something that challenges rather than dulls the intellect, do yourself a favor.
