Students should participate in UPB programs

The issue: UPB is trying to promote diversity during the summer sessions with its programs.

What we think: Students should take the opportunity to stop and sample some of the board's programs during the semester.

The life of a student is sometimes a hectic one. College life, after all, is wrought with pains such as homework, assignments and financial worries.

Summer sessions, traditionally, are less hectic. True, classes that would normally take 15 weeks in a normal school semester are compressed into four weeks during summer. But students normally take fewer classes during this period.

With a lighter workload, students have more time on their hands. With more time on their hands, students can afford to sample the simple pleasures in life, such as a day spent lazily in the sun.

UPB gives these students an alternative to sun-soaking the summer days away. With a variety of activities, UPB caters to students with a myriad of interests. While UPB is always generating school unification building activities throughout the year, now is the prime time to become involved with these activities for many reasons.

First, a lot of the activities are very accessible. Live on the Mall music presentation can be caught before or after class, and allow students to listen to music and in some cases win prizes. What college student can deny a free giveaway?

Second, all activities and trips planned for the summer with a fee are never more than $10 and include free transportation. So not only do you get to participate in a fun activity, carpooling is good for the environment and not having to pay money for gas is good for broke students.

The third reason to get involved with UPB's programs this summer is to meet people. These are really great programs that give students a chance to get to know one another and let's face it, over the summer the student population has vastly decreased and many familiar faces have disappeared from our views. UPB provides students with a valuable opportunity to develop new friendships and promote campus unity.
