Court rules Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional; violates rights

A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional due to the words "under God" which was added by Congress in 1954.

The decision does not take effect for several months and still allows further appeals. The ruling was cited by the appeals court by the fact that an atheist or holder of certain non-Judeo-Christian beliefs could perceive it as an endorsement of monotheism.

If the ruling is allowed to stand, schoolchildren will no longer be able to recite the pledge, at least in the nine Western states covered by the court Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington state.

G8 Leaders focus on weapons and elimination of terrorism, Arafat

Leaders of the top eight world powers agreed to fund $20 billion to a project focusing on dismantling and disposal of weapons of mass destruction in the former Soviet Union.

Along with the agreement to stop terrorism, President Bush agreed to concentrate efforts to stop terror groups from possessing lethal weapons. Included was a controversial proposal to pursue peace in the Middle East, with strong encouragement on electing another leader to Palestine other than Yasser Arafat, who has been a constant problem.
