SBZ to sing '80s at Red Carpet
Being caught in a time warp is supposed to be bad for some people. However, for the band Saved By Zero, a time warp is exactly where they are and intend to stay.
"Saved By Zero is all about the '80s," said SBZ manager and band member Blaine Mattson. "The whole point of Saved By Zero is to take people back to an earlier, simpler time."
And they're coming to the Red Carpet tonight.
So who is Saved By Zero?
Musically, they are the representation of every hit '80s song. They have a wide repertoire of songs ranging from Madonna, Devo, Duran Duran, INXS, Peter Gabriel, Modern English and Prince, just to name a few.
"We are '80s pop and new wave music," Mattson said. "We are the music that put TV on the map, we are what made MTV what it is today."
Each band member has a specific artist of which they do a selection of lead vocals for.
Selections include "Take On Me" by A-Ha and "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel.
Mattson has been part of SBZ since the first days many years ago. The current line up is about one and a half years strong. Current members include Sheila Flash, RodNeon, Leroy Velvet, Dick Abercrombie and Nigel Scratch.
So tonight they plan on rocking the worlds of every young listener there. Originally a Minneapolis band, Saved By Zero has played at the Red Carpet several times before. They recently played on Memorial Day Weekend.
"We've played at the Carpet before," said Mattson. "It's one of my favorite clubs. Those that go to St. Cloud like us."
"Being part of Saved by Zero is bloody great," said English native and guitarist, Scratch. "St. Cloud has the sauciest birds."
Scratch has been with Saved By Zero since their tour in Sexton, England, about a year and a half ago.
"Some of me mates back in England knew Saved By Zero. They knew Blaine when he toured back in England," Scratch said. "And he called needing a fiery young man on guitar and I flew in and started the next day."
Saved By Zero has a flavor unique to the '80s. They dress in costume, RodNeon dresses as Devo and Scratch moonlights as Modern English. Each set is outlined by which song is next on their extensive set of hits. Their goal is to bring their audiences back to the '80s as much as possible.
The band first started out in the Twin Cities several years ago and since then has had several different members, with this group being one of the lengthiest assemblies. Each member is from somewhere across the country with Velvet being the only Minnesota native.
Saved By Zero exhibits extreme energy and an atmosphere that time warps their audiences back to the days of big hair, hot pants, Zubaz and synthesizers.
"We love it," Mattson said. "I love to see the people having a great time and drinking too much."
