Campus rec focuses on student programs

As we approach mid summer, most of us have already learned how in or out of shape we really are. We also contemplate maintaining or improving those munchie laden bellies with good healthy activity.

However, for many students, the question of where to work out and how much money can one spend stops many students short in their quest from achieving a healthy physique.

The answer to those questions is within SCSU's own Campus Rec department. Campus Rec offers plenty of activities for the athlete and non-jock alike.

"Now is the time to be using those services," said Ron Seibring, Director of Campus Rec.

Located in the Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse, students can participate in a wide range of activities.

From open swim and lap swim, to basketball and Outdoor Endeavors and the opportunities they offer. While many sport camps use the main fieldhouse for summer camps, there are still activities to do during the down times, which are usually Fridays, and also there is the use of Eastman for other activities. There wide ranges of activities are available, including stairmasters, Nordic Track, aerobics classes and a variety of class activities.

"Summer is very different. People want to shift their focus," Seibring. said. "People want to be outside."

There are intramural teams including soccer, volleyball and badmitton. To participate, all students have to do is call or visit the Fieldhouse.

There are also a 5k fun run offered every Tuesday night at 6 p.m. outside at Halenbeck Hall, for those who are serious about improving their long distance running time, and for those who would like to get out, and talk a long evening walking, running and socializing.

Both the Halenbeck Fieldhouse and the Eastman Fitness Center are open during the weekdays during the summer. Outdoor Endeavors is open during the week and also on Sundays.

Outdoor Endeavors offers a wider range of activities for those who would like to get involved in something beyond a gym/fitness atmosphere. Here students can do anything from renting equipment to canoe, camp or kayak. In the winter skiing, snowshoeing and sledding is also available. Of course there is always the climbing wall too.

"A lot of people don't know about us," said Jina Schaefer, student supervisor. "Don't be intimidated. We'll answer your questions and get you started."

All these opportunities have very cheap day, weekend and week rental prices. All the opportunities also have the opportunity for those who have never experienced to have personal instruction, too.

Other fun activities include a canoe shuttle on the Mississippi only on the weekends. You can rent a canoe for $30, for up to three people and canoe down the river and are picked up later down the river.

During the year, Outdoor Endeavors also offers bigger trips to different places around the state and other places in Wisconsin and Michigan.

"In the fall and in the spring we lead trips,"Schaefer said. "We will have even more this year. I am very positive, we have a lot of new programmers."

Campus Rec is keeping busy this summer; they recently hosted the 15th annual Star of the North Games. St. Cloud was the first host to the games, and has hosted the first, 10th and 15th year.

"It was phenomenal," Seibring said . "We had over 8,100 participants. It was held so that the passes could participate."
Participants from across the state joined to compete in various events and celebrate being active in recreational activities. It was held in conjunction of SCSU, the St. Cloud Parks and Recreations, the Visitors Bearu and the Minnesota Sports Commission, which is a state agency that the state games are arranged through.

However, many students have found that the facilities of Halenbeck and Eastman are a little snug.

Under the new contract for the new football field and fitness and health center, there are plans for more aerobic studios, a possible martial arts center, and for the resources of Outdoor Endeavors for the kayaks and canoes an outdoor area, as well as a new climbing wall and many other opportunities. The project's ground breaking is anticipated this spring.

"This is not a fitness, wellness center, it's a sports center," Seibring said. "Campus Rec is about meeting all levels of needs whether its fitness or outings, we provide those types of activities. Students choose to do campus recreations to have opportunities."
