Students, historians dig archaeology trips
By Paul Solsrud
Archaeologist, historians and volunteers from SCSU along with the Sherburne County Historical Society, will be uncovering history through an archaeological dig at an early 20th century farmstead on the Oak Savanna Land Preserve near Becker, MN.
The archaeological work will be conducted on Friday July 26, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. by a team of volunteers along with Dr. Rothaus, associate professor of history, and Darlene Backes, curator of education at the Sherburne County Historical Society.
The several acre Oak Savanna Land Preserve, located west of Becker, was donated to the Sherburne County Historical Society for use as a park as well as a site for the new Historical Society building. The park is intended to be fun as well as educational for all age groups.
"We hope to have public archaeological experiences each year," Rothaus said.
Several digs have already taken place on the donated property.
Artifacts such as farm implements, pottery, tools and trash were unearthed in a silo and around the farmstead.
All excavation is done by hand because most of the artifacts are covered by a minimal amount of dirt.
"Everything is buried and overgrown," Rothaus stated.
This Friday's dig will consist of digging "test trenches" in an attempt locate any artifacts or possibly the remains of an old house foundation Crews will begin work on the new Historical Society soon.
The volunteers will attempt to clear the area needed for upcoming excavation, as well as search for a house foundation that is anticipated to be found somewhere on the property.
"We've had an overwhelming response to this," Backes said.
The limit of 12 volunteers has been met, and an additional 14 volunteers are now on a waiting list for future digs. For more information call 763-261-4433.
