Valleyfair trip full of ups, downs

48 SCSU students boarded the bus at approximately 10:15 a.m. in front of the Atwood Center,as students anticipated for what lied ahead of them: Power Tower, Thunder Canyon, Mad Mouse, Wild Thing, the Corkscrew. At midnight, the group returned back to SCSU. Even after four years of going on the trip, planned by Kim Bruemmer, graduate assistant of the University Program Board and also chaperoned by Carlos Meza, a UPB intern, it is still a success.

"We had a really good turn out this year," Bruemmer said. "It is a good way to get students off campus and have fun."

Bruemmer also stressed that going in a large group means better sales, which only cost SCSU students $10. Individually would be $31.95 plus an extra $7 for parking.

"Going in large groups is better because you have one price and one entrance fee," she said. "We choose Valleyfair because there are so many different things you could do."

Valleyfair is located in Shakopee, Minn., about 45 minutes south of Minneapolis. It was established in 1976 and is owned by Cedar Fair. The park sees over one million guests a year that come from all over the world with rides that will leave you breathless.

Who comes up with the crazy names for the rides? A poll is distributed among teenagers and staff that is narrowed down to the top ten names. The top people, such as the general manager, then decide the final verdict.

When asked about the most popular attraction at Valleyfair, Ami Kkula, marketing manager, says Wild Thing, a 5,469 foot roller coaster with the longest low-gravity section in the world; followed by Power Tower, a three-connected 250-foot-tall white steel towers with a pyramidal top featuring the Valleyfair logo; followed by the High Roller, a 70 foot roller coaster; and the waterpark, which consist of Ripple Rapids, Panic Falls, Hurricane Falls, and Raging Rapids that are all guaranteed to leave your heart pounding or cool you off.

Entertainment shows also contribute to the park's success, such as the "Misfit of Magic" show with comedic magician Ed Alonzic, Dueling Pianos and The Beach Band.

Valleyfair as of Wednesday introduced KidTrack, a new program that assists in quickly reuniting lost children with their parents. Guests with children can register for the safety system at Guest Services or Berenstein Bear Country, where a special KidTrack wristband with the parent's cell phone number is placed on the child's wrist. If the child gets lost, he or she needs to go to any Park employee for help. KidTrack assures that Valleyfair has an immediate method to contact the parent. Valleyfair also participates in numerous fundraisers as well.

According to Kkula, it's a great place to be on a nice summer day.

"Our goal is to provide people with fun," Kkula said. "It's a great place to bring your friends and family and get away for a day."

Valleyfair officially closes Sept. 2, so hurry on out there for a fun and thrilling time!
