Pope canonizes Catholic Church's first Indian, with much aplomb

Wednesday marked history in the Roman Cathoic Church as Pope John Paul II canonized the first Indian, St. Juan Diego.

In a ceremony mixing Mexico's European and Indian traditions, the saint was recongized and celebrated. In Mexico City's Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the Pope spoke of the Virgin Mary's appearance to Juan Diego in 1531 as it sanctifies the native culture.

Canoe guide, camper drown in Boundry Waters Canoe Area

Campers, staff and family are mourning the deaths of a 17-year-old Iowa girl and a canoe guide who drowned in the BWCA of northeastern Minnesota, Tuesday.

The Lake County sheriff's department says Jamie Christenson of Marshalltown, Iowa, was swimming near the Upper Basswood Falls, near the Canadian border, when she was pulled into the turbulent water.

Eric Hurst, 24, of Ventura, Calif., swam out to help her when he was pulled under by the current. Both were wearing personal flotation devices. Christenson was a camper with a group of 56 people from Trinity Lutheran Church of Iowa camping at Camp Vermilion.
