Move-in day changes are a success

The issue: Did the way move-in day was set up this year work better than previous years?
What we think: Move-in day changes successfully improved the process.

With almost 3,000 students now living in SCSU’s dorms, the potential for congestion, frustration and general chaos during this year’s move-in day was high.

However, because of changes in the move-in day process, students and their families enjoyed a Labor Day that was perhaps not quite as laborious as they had expected.

Having vehicles enter campus on 16th Street South from Clearwater Road relieved congestion at the often busy 10th Street and 5th Avenue intersection, which in past years has become extremely congested during move-in day.

Moving the “staging area” from K-Lot to Atwood Mall was another good call on the part of the university. This allowed K-Lot to be filled with cars, getting traffic off St. Cloud streets sooner than in years past.

Once a large number of vehicles were parked in K-Lot, move-in day staff had an easy time of handing out information to each vehicle. In the past, this was done on a hall-by-hall lineup basis, which did not allow as many cars to receive the information at one time.

But by far, the biggest winner of the move-in day changes was spreading out the process over two days.

About one-third of students who are now living on campus came here last Sunday. Cutting the amount of traffic and move-in activity on campus by that one-third on Monday made the day more pleasant and efficient.

Move-in day is hardly without frustration, but it is a positive sign to see SCSU Residential Life paying close attention to the moving-in process.

Every attempt at streamlining the day is a welcome one. With the addition of Lawrence Hall to the list of on-campus residence halls next fall, hopefully Res-Life will have even more ideas for making move-in day easier.
