Club hockey team seeking players
As the only Division I sport on campus, hockey is without question the glamour sport at SCSU. Now those that don’t have a scholarship to play can experience the thrills of a full-contact game with a home and road schedule.
Following the women’s lead, a group of students have formed a men’s club hockey team that will compete in the American Collegiate Hockey Association. Hockey fans with long memories will remember that the SCSU women’s team won the league’s national championship two years ago and lost last year’s championship game in overtime.
Both clubs are seeking players to fill their rosters, with different goals. The women are seeking players to bolster one of the most talented club teams in the country, while the men are trying to get their team off the ground.
“This is for any student at St. Cloud State who is not associated with the Division I program,” said team founder Todd Kohnert. “It’s for players from the beginning level to experienced who are interested in playing an aggressive level of hockey and traveling to play a 30-game schedule.”
The team will compete against several other Midwestern colleges, such as Minnesota-Duluth, South Dakota State, MSU- Mankato and Iowa State. Unlike the intramural leagues, the club league is full-contact and plays more according to standard hockey rules.
The team will be conducting tryouts next week on Monday and Tuesday to fill the 24-man roster. Tryouts will take place at the National Hockey Center’s practice rink at 9:15 p.m. on Monday and 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The women’s club is also trying to fill their roster, and even though they have been to the national championship game two years in a row, they are still seeking new players.
“We have a 20 person roster and no returners are guaranteed a spot,” said women’s club hockey president Brenda Schute.
The women’s practices will also take place at the NHC practice rink from Sept. 23-26 from 9:45 to 11:15 p.m.
Kohnert expressed what both teams are feeling right now: the desire to fill the roster and get the teams going.
“We’re just looking for anyone who’s interested in playing,” he said. “Hockey’s pretty big around St. Cloud State and there’s a demand for it. Any player that’s interested is more than welcome.”
Players should have all their own gear (shoulder pads, helmet, breezers, skates) and call (320) 230-4421 with questions.
