Outdoor concert to create diversity, fun
By Emily Pryor
Combining all artistic and musical talents, the 13th annual Earth Mother Mind Jam will meet again on Sept. 21. This time it is 15 miles from St. Cloud, at Powder Ridge Ski Area in Kimball, MN.
Earth Mother Mind Jam is open from 11a.m. to 1a.m. It is a multi-cultural festival featuring poetry, beer and wine, performance art, music, a barbeque, dance, concessions, camping, a moonwalk activity, andmore.
Booths will be set up for various organizations in the area to visit. There will be various vendors, arts, crafts, and hot air balloon rides. Michelle Joiner, an artist who helped organize the children’s area, said there will be plenty of activities for kids.
This year’s sponsors include KVSC FM, Aria Communications, Rockhouse Production in St. Joe, Grede Foundries, and Vetrans Chapter 290.
According to Ralo, an artist who is the founder of Earth Mother Mind Jam, it has been compared to festivals like Lilith Fair and Lalapalooza. Earth Mother Mind Jam features many independent artists.
This art and music festival gathers all sorts of cultures together.
“It creates an atmosphere with diversity and music,” said Joiner. “Wait 20-30 minutes and a new band will be on.”
Ralo said there will be many different types of music on three different stages. The festival will be showcasing local bands, regional bands, and some famous superstars, all of which are independent.
Vince Welnick (Grateful Dead, the Tubes) Devon Evans (Bob Marley and the Wailers) and Chico Chism (Howlin Wolf, BB King, Albert King) will be there.
There will be a Cuban singer from San Francisco, blues artists and some local teenage bands from Elk River.
For anyone that’s artistic and interested in participating in the art festival, this year’s festival includes an Iron Pour, where different metals will be melted down to make a community sculpture. The cost is $25 for materials.
In the children’s area, parents will be able to rest while kids create.
There are two scheduled events for the children, one being an air-dry clay booth, instructed by a professional potter, as well as multicultural mask-making for kids.
There will also be plenty of other events available for kids. They can indulge in cutting, gluing, painting and stamping, while decorating cards, envelopes and finger puppets.
There is also an activity called “All About Me,” a multicultural activity in which kids decorate paper dolls, and a table with Play-Doh or clay for the kids to create at as well.
“I’d like to stress that it’s for all ages,” Ralo said.
“For teens of ages 18-21, who are too young to go to bars, it’s an alternative.”
Tickets are sold at Electric Fetus, 3rd Stone and www.ticketweb.com. Ticket prices are $20 advance and $25 at the gate. Campsites are available for $20. Children under 12 are free. For more info see www.themindjam.com.
