Volleyball team falls to 1-5 on season

The St. Cloud State Husky volleyball team seemed to have it going early in their match against the Southwest State University Mustangs on Tuesday night in Halenbeck Hall, as they won the first game 30-28.

But Southwest State came roaring back, and handed the Huskies their fifth loss of the season, winning three games to one.

In the first game the Mustangs took an early 6-10 lead. However, behind the leadership of junior setter Kari Turkowski, the Huskies came back to win the close game.

Turkowski had 13 kills, three aces, 45 sets and 18 digs on the night.

“The offense was like a yo-yo,” said head coach Dianne Glowatzke, “but the two middles were our bright spots, which is the first time all year that we’ve had consistent play in the middle.”

The Mustangs were penalized two points for an illegal substitution in the second game, and the Huskies were given a point, putting SCSU up 23-18.

St. Cloud could not hold off a late Mustangs charge though as SWSU won the second game 30-26, and tied the match at one game apiece.

St. Cloud led big and early in the third game 10-4, but SCSU could not hold off two more late runs in games three and four by the Mustangs, as SWSU went on to win the match and the final two games with identical 30-28 scores.

“We have to be ready for balls and not stand up on defense,” Turkowski said.

“We have to learn how to close the door on teams.”

Turkowski is one of only three juniors on this young, senior-less Husky team. She has been called upon to be SCSU’s leader by coach Glowatzke, who has some very high expectations and praise for Turkowski.

“I always say Turkowski is one of the best setters in the nation,” Glowatzke said. “She does an incredible job as a setter, and runs our whole offense.”

The only other two juniors on the team, outside hitter Jane Backes and rightside hitter Cara Bartolic, had decent nights racking up 10 kills and 28 digs combined.

Sophomores Leah Herrbolt and Megan Hardy also had 20 or more digs a piece in Tuesday’s match.

Even though the Husky volleyball team has started off the season with a 1-5 record, they still feel they will not be a team to take lightly.

“We’re going to surprise some teams,” Turkowski said.

“We’re going to go into every game confident, and not worry that we’re ranked last, but go out there and beat those teams.”

Winona State, UM-Morris and UM-Crookston are Husky opponents that shouldn’t take SCSU lightly this weekend, as SCSU travels to Omaha, Neb. for the NCC-NSIC Crossover Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
