Staff Report

The St. Cloud State golf teams were in action this weekend as the women hosted a tournament, and the men competed in another.

The women had a delayed start to their Husky Invite Triangular on Saturday and only played nine holes at Wapicada Golf Course in St. Cloud. The three-team field also included Minnesota State, Mankato and Southwest State University. The three teams were set to play 27 holes on Sunday at Fairways Golf Course in St. Cloud to conclude the invitational.

The Husky who got off to the fastest start on the first nine holes was sophomore Frances Rise (Perham). Rise shot a four-over-par 39 to pace SCSU. Junior Amber Sitzman (Pierz) was right behind Rise with a 42. Juniors Angela Kippley (St. Cloud) and Kristin Osheim (Brandon, S.D.) also came in with respectable scores of 43.

The men’s team had a very successful Saturday as they placed fourth, out of 19 teams, in Saturday’s first round of the St. John’s University Invitational. The Invitational, also being played at Wapicada, had the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire as the first day leader with a team score of 292.

SCSU combined for a score of 314 on the day. Freshmen Chris Little (Maple Grove) led the red squad with a round of 77. Junior Derek Swedberg (Alexandria) and freshmen Bob Gartland (St. Cloud) were right behind Little with both having rounds of 78.

The SCSU black squad was led by junior Josh Kuha (Walker) and freshmen Eric Winter (St. Cloud). Both shot 78’s to pace the second group on Saturday. Eric Rowbottom (Aurora) shot an 81, and Jamey Harrington (Elmwood, WI) an 82 to fill out the rest of the scorecard for the black team.

The women’s next meet takes place in Marshall on Sept. 21 and 22. The men host the St. Cloud Husky Invite next weekend at the St. Cloud Country Club. The first Husky group tees off at 11:30 a.m., with the second group going out at 12:15 p.m.

SCSU will be paired with St. John’s University and the University of Minnesota State, Mankato in the first group, and the second group will be teamed up with South Dakota State University and St. John’s. Four other pairings will follow these groups after they tee off.

No other information was available about Sunday’s scores when this edition went to press. There will be a complete wrap-up of the tournaments in Wednesday’s Chronicle.
