Let facts, not emotion guide abortion debate

After seeing the offensive anti-choice poster display on campus I feel obligated to express my outrage and dispel some myths. The display of grotesque images showed little regard for the feelings of others. They set out to offend and mislead the public. Don’t let anti-choice propaganda misinform you. Get the facts.

Ninety-eight percent of abortions take place in the first 20 weeks, before the fetus is even close to fully formed. Roe vs. Wade only protects abortion until the point of viability except when the life or the health of the mother is in danger.

Most aborted fetus photography actually involved babies who died before birth, sometimes autopsy picture, and sometimes, as awful as it may sound, stillbirths dismembered for the sake of taking the picture. The images are not only inaccurate; they are presented in order to cause emotional distress.

I am deeply concerned to see an attack on Planned Parenthood. The core of Planned Parenthood affiliate medical service is contraception and accompanying health care and counseling. The only way to reduce abortion is to eliminate unplanned pregnancies. For some women, the only health care they receive each year may be from Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood estimates that each year they prevent an estimated half-million unintended pregnancies.
