Men’s golf hosts tourney
By Ryan Sibinski
The SCSU men’s golf team is set to host the St. Cloud Husky Invite this weekend at St. Cloud Country Club.
The tournament will be a 36-hole event, with golfers playing the first round on Saturday, and the last round on Sunday.
Minnesota State University-Mankato, South Dakota State University, Lawrence University, St. John’s University-teams one and two, and the SCSU red and black team are expected to compete in the event.
SCSU has a clear advantage over the rest of the field going into the event, as it will be played on their home course.
“We know are way around that course a lot better than any other one around.” first year Husky golfer Bob Gartland said.
Gartland shot a 160 in the first tournament of the year, The St. John’s Invite, and looks to improve on those numbers this weekend.
“We have done a lot of work on our short games. I am trying to get that improved.” Gartland said on the recent team practices.
The SCSU golfers do most of their practicing at The Fairways and St. Cloud Country Club with the help of coach Judy Larkin.
“Everyone is practicing on a daily basis to keep our games up and improve,” coach Larkin said.
“We do a lot of work with our short games. Sometimes we use Fairways’ par-three course just because they don’t have anything more than 100 yards.”
Larkin said that nearly 75 percent of the golf strokes are made from100 yards and in, which makes the short game so important.
This weekend’s tournament will be the second event of the fall season for the two St. Cloud teams. In the first event the Husky red and black teams finished with a team total of 630, which landed them in a tie for seventh out of the 19-team field.
Chris Little and team captain Derek Swedberg, of the red team, had the low rounds of last week’s tournament for the Huskies, with two-round totals of 154.
First-year player Eric Winter and junior Eric Rowbottom, of the Black team, also had notable scores with 156, and 159 totals respectively.
