Violist to perform
A free viola recital will showcase the talents of violist Coca Bochonko along with pianist Anne Oleksowicz and violist David Arnott. It will be sponsored by the music department on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
The recital will be held in the Ruth Gant Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center. The purpose of this event is to showcase the talent of these artists and to bring music to the community. The artists will perform music by Bloch, Bartok, and Schubert.
"(These performances) are a lab situation for our students to hear and perform their music," said Associate Professor of Trombone and chair of the department, Dr. Mark Springer.
Bochonko, 32, is a current resident of St. Cloud and has performed on campus several times. She is originally from Winnipeg, Canada and moved to St. Cloud in 1996. Bochonko has much experience having played with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, and the St. Cloud Orchestra. One of her future goals is to take her talent to one of the larger orchestras such as the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra.
Bochonko loves playing the viola.
"I love being able to be a part of the music that I play, whether it be in an orchestra or solo," she said.
Bochonko has loved music since the age of four when she first picked up a violin. She learned music through what is called the Suzuki methodlearning by hearing rather than reading. It is much the same way that babies learn to speak, by listening to people around them instead of reading.
Bochonko's greatest influences have been Joanne Martin, her first viola teacher, who told her she played the violin like the viola; Ellen Rose and Sabina Thatcher who is the principal violist of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. At age 14 Bochonko picked up the viola for the first time for her youth orchestra. Since age 17, she has never looked back.
The music department presents approximately 150 other performances each year within the community. These performances feature students, staff, national, and international performers.
There will be a guest recital featuring Jonus Dubin and Friends Oct. 6, the SCSU Music Faculty Collage Concert on Oct. 11, and a student recital by Melissa Schanfield on the flute on Oct. 15. On Oct. 18 the Faculty Jazz Quintet will perform followed by a graduate recital by Jean Adler on the clarinet and there is a Faculty Recital featuring Shannon Loehrke on piano on Oct. 19.
