Candidates visit SCSU

Gubernatorial candidates Tim Penny (Independent) and Roger Moe (DFL) will visit SCSU this week.

Moe will have an open forum today at 1 p.m. in the Glacier Room at Atwood Memorial Center. There will be a short presentation followed by an open forum for faculty and students.

Penny will have a less formal discussion with students tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. in the Union Room at AMC.

Students will get the chance to ask questions of candidates at both events.

"It's a part of being an active and concerned voter," said SCSU Student Government President Brett Sween, who organized the visits. "The people that we elect directly affect the quality of our education."

According to Moe's Web site, his main platform is his dedication to policies affecting children. He supports more available childcare, health insurance for every child, children entering kindergarten being ready to learn and an environment free of toxins.

"I will be a governor who is committed to a lifetime of learning and access to higher education for all of our citizens," Moe said.

As a senator, Moe has helped to pass the MN Job Skills Partnership Board and helped design Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.

"Our colleges and Universities must be a priority because that is where we train our workforce, conduct research to better our society, and help people meet their own personal goals of self-enrichment," Moe said.

Penny also has strong views about education. According to his website, Penny would like to see K-12 schools each operate as individual charter schools so that new ideas can emerge through local decision making. He would also like to reduce the number of high school drop-outs and ensure health insurance coverage for more children and minorities.

As an adjunct faculty member of Winona State University, Penny has a strong interest in strengthening MnSCU ties and to ensure that, "MnSCU institutions are economic and workforce development engines," according to his Web site.

"Penny will work to ensure that qualified MN students who want to go to college be given that opportunity," Penny's Web site stated.

Penny's main platform is to offer a practical common-sense approach to getting the work of the state done.

All four gubernatorial candidates Penny, Moe, Ken Pentel (Green) and Tim Pawlenty (R) will express their concerns at a luncheon debate at the St. Cloud Civic Center in the Herberg Suite Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event, which is sponsored by the St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce and the St. Cloud Rotary Club, is open to the public and costs $10 per person. To register to attend the debate, call 251-2940, ext. 112.

The candidates will also take part in a discussion at Technical High School later Tuesday. The event will give students the chance to ask questions and express their concerns.
