GLBT looking for volunteers

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender (GLBT) Services needs volunteers for the Peer Support Program.

Students who are knowledgeable about issues related to GLBT individuals, can volunteer to provide support for students who may be questioning their sexuality or gender, experiencing discrimination or going through the coming out process.

"The (Peer Support) program offers one-on-one support for students," said Sheri Atkinson, coordinator of GLBT services. "It's a peer they can talk to."

The Peer Support program started with only one student volunteer, but has grown over the past two years since it was founded.

"It's a growing program. We've seen an increased number of people utilizing the program," said Atkinson.

Not only does the program help those in need; it offers skills and benefits to peer supporters who volunteer their time.

Any undergraduate or graduate students interested in the Peer Support program have the opportunity to listen to concerns, offer insight on certain issues, and help facilitate the healthy self-assessment and development of individuals who may have concerns about their sexuality and/or gender identity.

This year GLBT is also offering academic support for anyone with questions or concerns about homework or college life.

"We take a pro-active role in supporting students academically and emotionally," said Mike Tweed, graduate student and second coordinator of GLBT services.

Volunteers will also become educated about issues concerning GLBT individuals.

This year GLBT feels they will get a lot accomplished said Amanda Golly, Building Bridges Coordinator and peer supporter at GLBT. Golly is starting her third year as Peer Support volunteer and said she is glad she has been involved. The more people that volunteer, the more help can be given, she said.

Anyone who participates in the Peer Support program will receive training from GLBT services, whether or not they are a GLBT individual.

"Anybody who is a good listener can volunteer," said Atkinson.

Students who are interested in the program can pick up an application in the GLBT services office, Atwood Memorial Center 105, or call 654-5166. The application deadline is Sept. 27.
