Letters to the Editor: Vigil honored all
This is in regards to the Sept. 12 edition of the University Chronicle entitled "Vigil Stirs Emotions." Joseph Palmersheim mentioned that there was not an American flag present at the vigil. Unless your sight is clouded by the same mis-information that you report with, you should have seen American Flags all over campus that day. Was there a flag on the Atwood Mall the evening of September 11th during that vigil, yes, it was hanging from the balcony of the Atwood Mall.
As one of the three planners for this event, let me share my thoughts. St. Cloud State University is a diverse campus with over 500 international students. To* create an inclusive environment we had as many flags up as possible. "Land of the free," my dear Joseph, which means as a country we represent the diversity and equality that should exist in this world.
Do you need to have an American Flag in your hand or even anywhere in sight to mourn the loss of lives? If you do, then how genuine is your patriotism? My friend Joseph, all 300 students who stood out there on September 11th with a candle in their hand, singing "Give Peace a Chance," honored all victims of September 11th, throughout the decades with their hearts and there is no greater thank you then one's heart.
Let me repeat what many of my much-respected fellow activists have said in the past year. 9-11 was an attack on humanity. This world suffers from hate, not just the United States of America. My young grasshopper, remember this, recognizing and mourning for every death does not make an American death less valuable. Isolating any minority only causes hate, something I do not want any more of on this campus. However, if you do, you can take your privilege and leave.
