Letters to the Editor: Zero Tolerance?
On Tuesday afternoon I happened to be walking across Atwood Mall when I noticed a large group of students crowding around a guy in all black. Like any curious individual I walked over and tried to listen to what the guy was saying. I'm referring to Mike Leisner. It angered me at the response the students were giving Mr. Leisner. I've always held the view that the people at colleges and universities were pretty open minded. But it didn't seem the folks standing around Mr. Leisner were listening. Instead they were shouting insults, holding signs and trying to remove him from his post.
What angered me the most is the fact that the students who were arguing thought their opinions were more valuable than Mr. Leisner.
I think we often forget that everyone has a right to their opinions even though the opinions may differ from our own.
I didn't agree with most of the things Mike Leisner said but I realized that he was merely stating his beliefs and I actually wanted to hear them. Because they were different and different people are cool because they have different ways of looking at things which in turn can change our views. But I couldn't hear most of what Mr. Leisner was saying because of all the shouting and interruptions. Instead of shouting insults and holding signs, how about trying to figure out why an individual holds such beliefs.
The thing about college that's so great besides the parties is the fact that everyone can have different points of view and be respected The folks who were shouting and holding signs showed a lack of respect. the question I pose to those individuals who interrupted the guy is... What if the situation were reversed?
