Junior setter Kari Turkowski (left) and freshmen middle/outside hitter Angie Mayers go up for a block Friday night at Halenbeck Hall. The Huskies lost all three sets to South Dakota State and fell to 0-4 in the NCC, and have a 3-10 record overall.
Two NCC powerhouses came calling to Halenbeck Hall this weekend to take on the Huskies.
However, despite a valiant effort by SCSU, the Husky spikers lost both matches and dropped to 3-10 on the season, and 0-4 in the NCC.
The nation’s No. 15 ranked team, the Augustana Vikings, were the first opponent the Huskies welcomed to Halenbeck on Friday night. SCSU pulled out a victory in the second game of the match, 30-18, but couldn’t pull out two more as they lost 3-1(30-20, 18-30, 30-23, 30-14). Sophomore hitter Leah Herrboldt and first-year hitter Amy Burke combined for 19 kills, with 11 and eight respectively. Kari Turkowski had her always-solid game with 27 sets.
Improvement was the key in the second match on Saturday night against the fourth-ranked South Dakota State Jackrabbits. Even though SCSU was swept 3-0, the scores of the games (30-19, 30-23, 30-28) show that the team improved greatly throughout the match.
“I think initially we backed off them a little bit,” head coach Dianne Glowatzke said. “And then all of a sudden we started to fight, especially that second game.”
The Huskies did start to come on strong in that second game as they took their first lead of the night, 14-13, off two straight aces by first-year hitter Jamie Schlagel.
The third game is when SCSU started to pour on the pressure. The Huskies either led or tied SDSU throughout game three.
“When we came out that third game we stuck it to them, and they had to bust their butts to beat us,” Turkowski said.
Although the outcome wasn’t what the Huskies wanted, the aggressiveness and tenacity they showed against these topped ranked teams was.
Head coach Dianne Glowatzke said that this attitude and style of play is what the Huskies have to carry over into the rest of the matches this season.
“We need to go out and hit hard,” Glowatzke said. “Once we’ve got them thinking aggressively the other things will come, and now it’s just to push this team to be aggressive all the time.”
Another goal that the Huskies have that should put them over the top in the matches to come is to play like they practice.
“If we play aggressive, play our game, and play like we practice we’ll beat them,” Turkowski said. “We have to do that, we can’t just say that all the time. We actually have to get out on the court and believe in each other.”
The next challenge that faces SCSU is a trip to Grand Forks, N.D. to take on 17-2 UND next Friday night. With the strong performances in the past few matches, Leah Herrboldt thinks that this Husky team will be able to surprise not only UND, but other teams in the NCC.
“We’re the underdog. I think we’re going to knock off a few teams that aren’t expecting it,” Herrboldt said. “They’ll just take us lightly, and we’ll come out and beat them.”
