Staff Report
The SCSU soccer team had a rough beginning to their conference season by losing a pair of games over the weekend.
On Sunday the Huskies were done in by the University of South Dakota, 3-0. USD scored two first half goals, and added another in the second to make up the scoring.
Coyote Lindsey Sturm scored the first South Dakota goal at the six-minute mark. The unassisted score came off an SCSU turnover, as Sturm put it past Husky goalkeeper Stephanie Brendel.
The second first half goal came from forward Teri Atkinson. Atkinson’s goal came at 42:29 on an assist from Jessica Schnell. The last USD goal came at 66:50 in the second half from Schnell. Schnell scored on the play from assists by Lauren Merritt and Lindsey Sturm.
Schnell finished with three shots on goal, one assist, and the one score. USD goalie Candice Martinez dominated the Husky offense saving all six of SCSU’s shots on goal.
Brendel finished with nine saves on the day, but her three goals allowed is what did her team in. Forwards Heidi Westrum and Jennifer Gill were the only Huskies who managed to have at least two shots on Martinez.
237 people attended the cloudy, cool contest on Sunday.
The other team that ruined the opening to the NCC season for the Huskies was the University of Northern Colorado. The No. 11 Golden Bears posted an identical 3-0 shutout over St. Cloud.
The perfect weather for the Friday afternoon game was of no consolation to the Huskies. UNC’s Jessica Brennan hooked up teammate Sara Peterson to score the only goal of the first half at 5:24.
UNC scored two more goals on Brendel in the second half. Christine Devaney hit pay-dirt on a corner kick at 47:56. The last goal came when Kina Thomas’ shot hit the cross bar and Momi Markus knocked in the rebound.
Brendel made 19 saves on the afternoon. Westrum was the only Husky who mounted an offensive threat as she had two shots. Golden Bear goalie Shanna Swinehart made three saves on the day, as she was barely contested by the SCSU offense.
82 were on hand to see UNC improve to 6-0-1 overall, and 1-0 in the NCC.
The Huskies are now 5-3-1 on the year, and 0-2 in the NCC. Their next match isn’t until Friday, when they host Augustana College at 4 p.m. at Halenbeck Field.
