Explosion kills American soldier
An American soldier and two Filipinos are dead and at least 25 people wounded yesterday after a bomb packed with nails exploded outside a bar in the southern Philippines.

The blast occurred just a few yards from a camp where U.S. troops had been staying while supporting a humanitarian mission on Basilan island. The Americans had stayed behind after the completion of a six-month counterterrorism mission aimed at helping local troops battle the al-Qaida linked Abu Sayyaf group.

The explosion was in Malagutay, 530 miles south of the capital, Manila. The American was a master sergeant who died from his wounds en route to a military hospital. The bomb was planted on a motorcycle and killed the driver who is suspected to be the one who brought the bomb.

Man arrested for wrestling alligator
A tourist who captured a live alligator at a putt-putt golf course was nabbed in a hotel parking lot, clutching the alligator and holding its mouth closed.

Derrick Dale Cooper, 22, of North Carolina, was charged with animal poaching and petty theft after using a noose to catch a 3-foot alligator Monday at the Congo River Golf Park, in Daytona Beach , Fla.

The putt-putt course was the scene of a similar incident last year when a pair of tourists were arrested for taking a gator to their hotel pool. Wildlife officials caught the pair as they were watching the animal swim.

Cooper was released Tuesday from the Volusia County Branch Jail after posting $1,000 bail. It was unclear if he had a lawyer. The golf park has a permit to keep the alligators, which were raised in captivity.
