Police crack down should encourage responsibility
Published:
Thursday, October 3, 2002
Happy Thirsty Thursday. As the story on page 3 makes evident, drinking is obviously something that goes on around campus, whether the campus community likes it or not. If people do decide to party, they should at least party smart.
There are a couple of things students should keep in mind before heading to the bars or the house parties tonight, this weekend, and forevermore.
Tip number 1: If you are living in the residence halls, don't get so wasted that you can't stand up. This will be a sure giveaway to the night supes that you are drunk and you will have to spend a cold night outdoors.
Tip number 2: Ladies walking to the bar or to the house parties, leave your platforms at home, so you don't risk twisting your ankle when you fall down in your drunken stupor.
Tip number 3: Don't walk home alone or let your friends walk home alone. This may seem like common sense during the day, but under the influence, it might evade you.
Tip number 4: Don't get so wasted that you will be inclined to make bad decisions, for example, going home with someone you just met at the bar is a bad idea.
Tip number 5: If you get caught for doing something you shouldn't have done, be it carrying an open container, or urinating in public, do NOT run away. You will only make things worse for yourself. Cooperate with St. Cloud's finest. You'll be glad you did.
Tip number 6: Don't kid yourself. The Public Safety Department and the police KNOW that the reason your backpack is full at 2 a.m on a Friday night isn't because you are getting ahead on some statistics homework.
Tip number 7: Have a sober friend to guide you home. Sure, it seems easy to get back home once you get to your destination, but in the dark and after a couple of drinks, it's not so easy.
Tip number 8: Be safe. If you're not responsible enough to drink, just don't do it. It's better to sacrifice a little fun than put yourself in jeopardy.
