Gaudry, Deming to be G.R.E.A.T.
By Diana Matusewic
Diversity Events Educating People and Developing Arts and Music Foundation are proud to present Anne Deming and Rachel Gaudry, performing at the G.R.E.A.T. Playhouse Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
“It’s something different from what you would normally find in St.Cloud,” said Jed Cousin, Media Coordinator for DEEP. “Events that are not commercially viable (being brought into St. Cloud is DEEP’s mission).”
Gaudry’s music has been compared to Joni Mitchell and Paula Cole, while Deming has been compared to Grace Slick and Natalie Merchant. Both have been compared to Sarah McLachlan.
“Rachel’s vocals are very fine-tuned,” said Barry Braun, Executive Director of DEEP and Program Director for KVSC. “Anne’s harmonies are very melodic (while Deming’s music) deals with a lot of life issues that people should recognize.”
Rachel Gaudry, singer/songwriter from Sidney Australia is on a one month tour around the U.S. promoting her current album, “Leaving Traces.”
“It’s piano-based, adult-oriented pop,” is how Gaudry describes her music, “they’re fairly personal songs.” A lot of her songs are about love, relationships and learning about who you are.
“I’ve been playing piano since I was six. I’ve been performing as my professional job for the past eight or ten years,” Gaudry said.
At the age of 11 she won a four- year music scholarship to a boarding school.Gaudry was also a finalist on “Star Struck.”
“I’ve been told it’s like an “American Idol” over here,” Gaudry said.
She also won a songwriting development award at the Johnny Dennis Light Music Awards in Australia and she has been a finalist for the UNISONG Songwriting competition.
“I’m going to do some gigs in Japan after I finish this tour,” Gaudry said.
She hopes to come back to the U.S. next March for the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin, Texas.
Anne Deming, singer/songwriter in Minneapolis started playing the guitar when she was a sophomore in high school. Then, during her college years, she performed at open mic nights and asked owners if they would be interested in listening to her tapes.
“I had no idea what I was doing,” Deming said.
Deming now has her own record label, Brutally Honest, which she also said is one way to describe her lyrics. Her current album is entitled “On Display.”
Deming’s music has been described as blues or folk rock, but, “acoustic rock is the one I can associate most with,” Deming said.
She has felt successful since the beginning of her musical career.
“Even when I was playing to five people in my dorm room,” Deming said. “Success is hard to define. I don’t necessarily think that success is a lot of money or a lot of fame.” However, she did say she wouldn’t turn the opportunity down if it came her way.
Deming and Gaudry will be interviewed on KVSC before the show.
“They’ve done a lot of work to get where they are. It’s been mainly through their work and their struggles to get where they are and that’s something DEEP supports,” Cousin said. “They don’t give you that rock star attitude.”
This event is open to all ages. Tickets are now $5 for everyone.
