Joy rides earn court dates for teens
Five 17-year-olds from Oakdale's Tartan High School each face four counts of motor vehicle theft in Dakota County Juvenile Court.

They are being charged with stealing a Dodge Caravan from a driveway in Elk River the night of Sept. 21 and abandoning it near a golf course near Hastings. Next, a Dodge Intrepid was stolen from a driveway in Douglas Township and driven to Miesville. An E-Z-Go golf cart was also stolen from the owner’s yard and later a Chevrolet Tahoe was taken from a driveway in Marshan Township.

The Tahoe’s owner saw people breaking into it and called police, who gave chase and caught two of the suspects while the others drove off in the Intrepid.

Man kills girlfriend over breakup
Authorities ruled Tuesday that a man distraught over the breakup of his relationship killed his former girlfriend before killing himself.

An autopsy showed that Quentin Roy, 37, of Redlake, died of a single gunshot, while Franchesca Gonzalez, 31, of Bemidji, died of an unspecified number of gunshot wounds.

The woman's mother, Judith Gonzalez, called police from a neighbor's house just after 1 p.m. Sunday. The first officer on the scene, Sgt. Robert Lehmann, found her covered in blood.

Two children, ages 9 and 10, were with her. Judith Gonzalez told Lehmann that Roy had shot her daughter. She said she tried to wrestle the gun away from him and was slightly injured in the attempt
