Mild homecoming proves success for community
Published:
Monday, October 14, 2002
In the grand tradition of homecoming weekend, there is always much talk about exceptionally good or bad situations involving mass amounts of people, which often includes lots of alcohol and people behaving abnormally.
This homecoming, however, was neither exceptionally good nor bad; it was quite mild, in fact.
If you notice, page two of this paper includes the crime report, according to the SCSU Public Safety Department, since the previous issue. But there weren't mile-long lists of crazy occurrences or severe cases of what did happen. It was just another PSD report, not a "classic" case of homecoming happenings.
However, walking around downtown or around the campus area was not an ordinary experience. It was much like Halloween for adults; many individuals walking around, many in a drunken stupor, others craving even the smallest bit of alcoholic consumption.
It's not that alcohol is necessary for homecoming, or at all, but in all honesty, it is a large part of it. Drink specials at the bars and house parties will prove that very idea.
Whether you were part of that crowd or not, one might notice that, even amongst the mass array of people in a variety of different situations, people behaved rather mildly. Parties were fewer and far between; people seemed more aware of the detrimental repercussions of acting "too crazy."
SCSU and the surrounding community should be proud. Whether it was because of informative people working for publications, communicating to the community about the dangers that homecoming weekend can present, or the proud St. Cloud officials taking care of legal business, people should know that their jobs were well-done.
Kudos to all those who showed maturity and responsibility to promote a safe and fun homecoming weekend.
