First-year student Nicole Doney separates some leaves to search for trash. Doney was one of the many students participating in Volunteer Links Husky Neighborhood clean-up. Organizations that participated in the event included Asian Students in Action, Z-club, Public Relations Student Society of America, Womens Club Hockey, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Dogg Pound Club, WW Holes Hall, Education Minnesota Student Program, SCSU Campus Recreation Department, Interfraternal Council, and the Hmong Student Organization.
SCSU students and staff gathered at Barden Park Sunday in the chilly fall air to participate in the Husky Neighborhood Cleanup.
Josephine Lee, president of Hmong Student Organization, carried empty cans of beer and garbage as she cleaned the west side of SCSU area, from Fifth Avenue to Eighth Avenue and from Fourth Street to Ninth Street.
"I couldn't believe the amount of cans that we saw in the neighborhood," Lee said.
SCSU's Volunteer Link and Student Organizations were expecting a messy neighborhood in the aftermath of homecoming celebration and advertised for the cleanup event and found 80 students willing to volunteer who were divided into 12 groups.
According to Lisa Staples, Volunteer Link coordinator, there were several different organizations who participated in the clean-up including: Asian Students in Action, Z-club, Public Relations Student Society of America, Women's Club Hockey, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Dogg Pound Club, WW Holes Hall, Education Minnesota Student Program, SCSU Campus Recreation Department, Interfraternal Council, and the Hmong Student Organization.
"I was really impressed by everyone's enthusiasm and dedication," Staples said.
Campus Recreation Department won a free bowling party and pizza for having the group with most volunteers.
"They were really remarkable with their hard work, and they deserved the prize," Lee said.
Winning the prize was not the main reason for the 12 groups' participation, but their sense of responsibility was more important.
"We are trying to help the community and have a clean campus and neighborhood," said Lee. "At the same time, we are trying to get students' attention to the many student organizations exist on campus and to our organization."
