Search ends for four navy flyers who crashed off California coast The Coast Guard has called off the search for four U.S. Navy officers. They've been missing since two Super Hornets fighter jets collided during a combat exercise on Friday off the California coast.
The four lieutenants were members of Strike Fighter Squadron 41, based at a Lemoore Naval Air Station near Fresno, Calif. They've been identified as 31-year-old Stephen Nevarez of New Orleans, La.; 30-year-old Joel Korkowski of Phoenix, Ariz.; 27-year-old Matthew Shubzda of Dallas; and 26-year-old Stephen Benson of Virginia Beach, Va.
A Coast Guard spokesman says the search was ended because of sea and weather conditions, and because of the amount of time that had passed since the pilots were reported missing.
Sniper possibly hits again in Virginia A cryptic appeal has been issued in the connection in the case of a man shot Saturday night outside a Ponderosa restaurant in Ashland, Virginia.
Police Chief Charles Moose said: “To the person who left us a message at the Ponderosa last night. You gave us a telephone number. We do want to talk to you. Call us at the number you provided.”
Authorities say they are working under the assumption that Saturday night’s shooting is the work of the Washington area sniper. The 37-year-old male victim was walking to his car with his wife when he was hit with a single bullet. Authorities have not released his identity, but say he is not from the area.
He is hospitalized in critical condition in Richmond. His condition is too unstable for doctors to operate again to remove the bullet that could conclusively determine whether the shootings are connected.
