| The guys of rock quartet Five Point Theory will take the stage of the Java Joint Oct. 26 and do what they do best: play the music that they love.
Straight from Aberdeen, SD, Five Point Theory plays rock that they really don’t know how to describe. Drawing inspiration from all music ranging from The Clash to Parliament Funkadelic, the most important thing to them is playing music.
“We’re always excited to play,” said guitarist/vocalist Joel Burckhard. “Personally, it’s the only time I feel comfortable in my skin. We can play (anywhere) and (we’ll) have a blast. We want to give people what we’ve got.”
Having released their first official recording in July, “The Batter of Bare News,” the band is ready to tour the country. However, due to a lack of exposure, it is tough for them to book consecutive gigs. So the band will continue to play where they can and sell as many CDs as possible before they embark on their next recording journey.
“Hopefully people will give us a chance,” Burckhard said.
There are many unique things about Five Point Theory that will allow them a chance. One is the fact that all the songs that the band plays are songs they will not take credit for writing.
“All the songs that we call our own come to me in dreams,” Burckhard said. “It gets so loud (in my head) that it wakes me up.”
Technically, the original songs are Burckhard’s. But Burckhard refuses to take personal credit for everything that comes to his mind. He just wakes up and transcribes all the music on paper before he loses them.
“We don’t write our songs, they’re given to us,” Burckhard said.
Meanwhile, guitarist Mike Moran attributes his inspiration to his family. He says watching his dad play has been one of his strongest inspirations, besides his 6-month-old baby, Miles Isaac Moran.
“Kids are so much fun,” Moran said. “(Everyone’s) got to have one.”
Family ties are quite strong in Five Point Theory. They frequently play with another Aberdeen-based band, Clair de Lune, whose lead singer/guitarist is Burckhard’s brother Justin.
After about three years of playing together as a band, the guys of Five Point Theory have fun no matter what. Between playing music, everyone in the band likes to listen to music, as well.
“Music is so exciting. There’s just so much out there,” Burckhard said. “(We) suck everything (we) can out of (music). Because really, what else is there?”
