Race promotes diversity, health
Runners and walkers, put on comfortable shoes and get ready to go; it’s time for the third-annual Great Pumpkin 5k Fun Run/Walk.
Beginning 10 a.m. Oct. 26, walkers and runners of all varieties will participate in the American Indian Center’s 3.1-mile race.
The Great Pumpkin run/walk began as a new way to initiate and enhance a healthy way of living. With an expectation of at least 100 participants, the American Indian Center is proud of what they’ve come to represent.
“(The run/walk is a way) to promote a healthy lifestyle,” said Don Day, director of the American Indian Center.
Also, it has become very successful.
“There are some real competitive runners in it,” Day said. He noted that there are some people, in varying age groups, who run the 3.1 miles, or 5 kilometers, in as little as 15 minutes.
“It’s the (third annual run/walk) and it’s been very well received,” said Diane Hanson, secretary and office manager of the American Indian Center. “It’s a nice event that draws exposure to the American Indian Center.”
All pre-registered participants will receive a long-sleeved t-shirt for their altruism. Walkers and runners of all interests are encouraged to join, even if they decide not to register until the day of the race. Those who are participating must check in between 8:30 and 9:50 a.m. the day of the event.
The run/walk will start and finish at the beginning of the Beaver Island Trail, which is next to Halenbeck Hall.
There will be a fee of $10 for those who pre-register for the event, and the event fee for those who register the day of the race is $12.
Awards will be given to the first three male and female finishers in age categories of 12 and under, 13-17, 18-24, 25-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 or over. The results will be available Oct. 28 and can be mailed to an individual for a fee of one dollar.
Also, for those who decide to dress up in their Halloween costumes, the five best-costumed individuals will win gift certificates.
