SCSU anxious for NDSU
By Ben Dunsmoor
The last two weeks of the Husky volleyball season are going to present some tough challenges.
The Huskies have to play the No.17 University of North Dakota, who handled them in an Oct. 4 match 3-0, this Saturday.
“We didn’t play very well against UND,” assistant coach Jenifer Odet said.
Facing UND the second time around is just the beginning of it. In the next two weeks the Huskies will play the current kings of the NCC standings, the red-hot University of Northern Colorado Bears and North Dakota State University twice, including a match this Friday at Halenbeck Hall.
The Bison, the defending NCC champions, are not as impressive as last year. However, they are looking to make a playoff run with the two victories over Augustana and South Dakota State this past weekend.
SCSU is not concerned about the Bison’s defending NCC champ status because they’ve lost some key players from that squad.
“You can’t really go off of what they did last year,” first-year hitter Amy Burke said. “This conference has totally changed in a season. We’re excited to play them because they’re the only team we haven’t played.”
One thing SCSU is looking to do against NDSU is spoil their playoff run.
“That would be awesome,” Burke said about preventing NDSU from making the playoffs. “We’re always looking to upset teams.”
According to Odet, with the way SCSU has been practicing this week, there’s a ripe opportunity for a good old-fashioned ‘W’.
“We’re having high intensity practices and keeping morale up,” she said. “Tuesday was a good short practice, but it was real intense. They competed, and they’re real excited about this weekend. I think they realize we have an opportunity.”
As the old adage once says, “If it doesn’t kill you, it will make you stronger.” That’s one thing that will come out of this weekend, a stronger SCSU volleyball team for the future.
