There's no reason not to vote this Election Day
Tuesday is Election Day.
With Election Day comes the valuable right to vote; with the right to vote comes no excuse not to do so.
Everyone should exercise that right. This country was founded on the principle of democracy, and countless U.S. servicemen and servicewomen have given their lives over the last 226 years to ensure that our freedom and way of life never changes including the right to elect officials to represent our communities, cities, counties and states.
Efforts in the last century to guarantee suffrage to once voiceless groups like women and minority groups is but another reason to head out to the nearest polling place on Tuesday. Not voting as a member of a populous where each individual vote may be cast equally is an insult to those who worked hard for that equal representation.
Chosing not to vote because "there's no candidate that represents my thoughts and beliefs exactly," or because "in the end, all the candidates are the same" are also not valid arguments. Democracy is about compromise, not absolutes.
The voter's job is to get informed about the candidates he/she must choose between. There may not be a perfect choice, but learning about candidates' stances often reveals the best choice among them.
Don't blow off Election Day because "I just don't care," either. Every student, faculty member and administrator at SCSU should care about the issues debated in on the current political scene.
Today's issues are not just important because this is our city, our state and our country they are also our future, our parents' social security, and our children's education.
Voting is not hard; it takes but a few minutes to register (if one is not already registered) and mark the ballot. On-campus residents, including those who are not from the central Minnesota area, can register and vote in Atwood.
There is simply no reason or excuse not to vote. Voting may seem like a small, almost insignificant act, but it has the potential to make a significant impact the 1998 election of Jesse Ventura as governor of Minnesota proved that. Go make a difference; get out there and vote.
