SCSU continues downward slide

The Husky volleyball team went into last weekend optimistic.

It was the first time all season they were playing North Dakota State University.

“We were pretty excited to play them,” said junior setter Kari Turkowski. “NDSU has been a pretty tough team, but we knew that they weren’t the powerhouse they had been.”

SCSU was pumped and ready to play the Bison and were hoping to get revenge for a loss to the University of North Dakota from earlier in the season. Unfortunately, the Huskies dropped two straight matches against NDSU and UND both Friday and Saturday nights.

The Huskies lost their first match to NDSU 3-0 (30-21, 30-28, 30-16). According to junior hitter Jane Backes, there was something about the match that was missing.

“Things didn’t seem to be clicking,” she said. “It kind of felt like there were six people on the court and not one team.”

“We kind of just backed down a little bit and gave up at the end,” Turkowski said about the match with NDSU.

Turkowski registered 16 kills and 19 sets. Sophomore Leah Herrboldt also had a decent game with four kills and 12 digs. Backes and Lindsay Ashburn had seven and five kills, respectively.

Three NDSU players achieved double-digits in the kills category. Kim Hebl led all Bison with 13, Colleen Tucker and Jenny Gronner both had 11. Kari Holmgren had a big match for the Bison with 40 sets and 13 digs.

UND was next up Saturday. This rematch against the Fighting Sioux panned out better than the first meeting, but not by much. The Huskies fell in a four game affair to UND 3-1(30-24, 30-14, 27-30, 30-24).

“We did some really good things,” Turkowski said, “but I wish we could have done some things a little better.”

“We came out with more intensity and played a lot more enthusiastic, and went out and had fun,” Backes said.

The stat line looked virtually the same as all the other matches this season with Turkowki carrying the team on her back.Turkowski had 10 kills and digs, with 34 set assists. Jane Backes had 12 kills and six digs.

“I just make myself mentally there and prepare myself every week,” Turkowski said. “I love playing and I’ll do anything that this team wants. I just make sure I’m ready to play so everybody can depend on me.”

Four North Dakota players combined for more kills than the entire Husky team. Emily Tuve, Heather Hanson, Kate Cahil and Laura Birkl all put up double digits in the kills category (48), the Huskies had 47.

The Huskies fell to 3-19 overall, 0-13 in the NCC, and are currently on a 14-game losing slide.
