El Al hijacker foiled by security Thanks to the quick thinking of security guards on Israel’s national airline El Al, a man who tried to hijack a flight from Tel Aviv to Istanbul was stopped.
None of the 170 passengers on board the Boeing 757 were harmed as El Al Flight 581 sent out a hijacking signal as it approached Istanbul. However, the plane was able to land safely.
The hijacker has been identified as Tawfiq Fukra, a 23-year-old Arab with an Israeli passport that sources are saying he was armed with a knife.
He was reportedly first threatening a flight attendant with a knife and tried to approach the cockpit when he was overpowered by two security guards, one posing as a passenger.
